नारळीकरांचा जन्म कोल्हापूर येथे जुलै १९, १९३८ रोजी झाला. त्यांचे वडील, विष्णू वासुदेव नारळीकर हे एक प्रसिद्ध गणितज्ञ होते. वाराणसी येथील बनारस हिंदू विद्यापीठाच्या गणित विभागचे प्रमुख होते. त्यांची आई सुमती विष्णू नारळीकर ह्या संस्कृत विदुषी होत्या. जयंत नारळीकरांचे शालेय शिक्षण वाराणसी येथे झाले. इ.स. १९५७ साली त्यांनी विज्ञानाची पदवी (BSc) प्राप्त केली.या परीक्षेत त्यांनी प्रथम क्रमांक पटकावला. त्यानंतर उच्च शिक्षणासाठी ते ब्रिटनमधील कॅंब्रिज येथे गेले. तेथे त्यांना बीए, एमए व पीएचडी च्या पदव्या मिळाल्या. रॅंग्लर ही पदवी, खगोलशास्त्राचे टायसन मेडल व इतर अनेक बक्षिसे मिळाली.
१९६६ साली नारळीकर यांचा विवाह मंगला सदाशिव राजवाडे (गणितज्ञ) ह्यांच्याशी झाला. त्यांना तीन मुली आहेत - गीता, गिरिजा व लीलावती. १९७२ साली ते भारतात परतले. त्यांनी मुंबई येथील टाटा मूलभूत संशोधन संस्थेच्या (टी.आय.एफ.आर.) खगोलशास्त्र विभागाचे प्रमुख म्हणून पद स्वीकारले. १९८८ साली त्यांची पुणे येथील आयुका संस्थेचे संचालक म्हणून नियुक्ती झाली.
स्थिर स्थिती सिद्धान्त
चार दशकांहून अधिक कालावधीपासून त्यांचे अंतरिक्ष विज्ञान क्षेत्रात संशोधन सुरू आहे. त्याच बरोबर सतत पुस्तके लिहिण्याचा कार्यक्रमही चालू आहे. सामान्य माणसाला खगोलशास्त्र समजवण्यासाठी त्यांनी गेली अनेक वर्षे प्रयत्न केले आहेत. यासाठी सर्व प्रसारमाध्यमांचा ते उपयोग करतात. त्यांच्या 'यक्षांची देणगी' या पहिल्याच पुस्तकाला महाराष्ट्र शासनाचा पुरस्कार मिळाला आहे.
१९६५ मध्ये त्यांना पद्मभूषण पुरस्कार मिळाला.
२००४ मध्ये त्यांना पद्मविभूषण पुरस्कार मिळाला.
२०१० मध्ये त्यांना महाराष्ट्र भूषण पुरस्कार मिळाला.
त्यांना भटनागर पुरस्कार आणि एम. पी. बिरला पुरस्कारही मिळाले आहेत.

Jayant Vishnu Naralikar
Naralikar was born in Kolhapur on July 19, 1938. His father, Vishnu Vasudev Naralikar was a famous mathematician. The head of the Mathematical Department of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.
